Overcharging on public transport

I recall the previous edition raving about how honest Malawians are, and how overcharging was almost unknown. Unfortunately this was not my experience: I found overcharging on public transport to be far more common in Malawi than in supposedly more
touristy countries such as Tanzania, Kenya or Uganda!

On the contrary I have not found this to be a problem with minibuses, taxis, or motor coaches in Lilongwe or other cities (mzuzu, blantyre, monkey bay). I would recommend having small bills either way as sometimes the drivers/money takers may claim to be “unable to provide change”
